Continuing the Legacy, Shaping the Future!
The Global STEM Initiative (GSI) is a non-profit organization that aims to promote STEM education in developing countries. The GSI chapter in Iraq was founded in 2023 by Meer Hamza, who is deeply committed to making a positive impact on the lives of Iraqi students. The chapter's primary objective is to engage with students, particularly those in high school and college, in order to empower their knowledge and cultivate an interest in STEM, thereby fostering a scientific environment. An essential outcome of such an environment is the generation of innovative ideas. Youth engagement can be achieved through various means, including competitions, boot camps, summer camps, as well as conferences or forums.
GSI acknowledges the rich STEM history of Iraq and endeavors to promote STEM education in developing nations.
In alignment with this mission, the GSI Iraq chapter was established, drawing inspiration from Iraq's formidable STEM heritage. Iraq boasts an extraordinary legacy in STEM, tracing its roots back to the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia.
Notably, the House of Wisdom, a renowned center of learning established in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age, stands as a testament to Iraq's contributions. Serving as a gathering place for scholars from diverse backgrounds, the House of Wisdom facilitated the translation and dissemination of knowledge across various disciplines, including mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy.
Ibn al-Haytham, a distinguished scientist and polymath of the Islamic Golden Age, occupies a prominent place in Iraq's STEM history. His significant advancements in optics, mathematics, and physics continue to shape our understanding of these fields. Ibn al-Haytham's groundbreaking research on optics, particularly his studies on light and vision, laid the foundation for the scientific principles that remain pertinent to this day.
Despite encountering challenges stemming from recent years of conflict and instability, Iraq continues to produce talented STEM professionals. The GSI Iraq chapter is fully committed to collaborating with students, teachers, and stakeholders to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of STEM education. Through the empowerment of youth and the provision of opportunities for exploration and excellence in these fields, our aim is to revive Iraq's standing as one of the foremost contributors to scientific and technological advancements.
We cordially invite you to join us on this journey to promote STEM education in Iraq. Together, we can make a significant impact and work towards restoring Iraq's prominence as a leading force in scientific and technological progress.
